I think I want to get out of the screens game

Reflections ~1 min

You got to, as they say, have a system. And one of mine is to, by default, wear shorts between April and September. That means today is the last day of default shorts-wearing in 2026, as we enter six months of much darker days here in the North East of England.

I have extremely blue eyes and thin corneas (so much so that I couldn't have laser eye surgery) so I get a lot of glare. That's very much pronounced on darker days when the difference between the screen I'm looking at and the ambient light levels are low. And no, artificial lighting doesn't help much, unless it's SAD lamp-level bright.

Anyway, after working intensely on something yesterday afternoon so that it would be done before I head off to Toronto tomorrow morning, I got another migraine. I get these for various reasons, including sleep, food allergies, and intense exercise. But a common trigger is too much time on screens.

I'm questioning whether this is how I want to spend my life: in a home office by myself, doing my work on screens and meetings people on video conference? It doesn't seem like much of a life sometimes.

But what else to do? I'm pretty good at what I do, and the off-screen options I can think of seem to revolve around manual labour – not something I want to be getting into as a 45 year-old... 🤔
