Discode Inferno
I came across discode.ai this morning, which describes itself like this:
You choose the rhythm, not the algorithm. Ecological, private, true and smart AI — built in Austria.
While I initially thought that it was a bit odd that a EU-based startup positioning themselves like this only allowed you to sign in via Google, thankfully you can provide a user name and password and just use that.
My Little Robot Friend had a look at the Terms & Conditions and Privacy policy, and said:
They are unusually clear and broadly aligned with EU GDPR, with transparent information about the Austrian controller, data flows, legal bases, and retention periods. The service does not use customer data to train models and applies on‑device masking before prompts are sent to third‑party LLM providers, although it still relies on a network of mainly US‑based processors and standard safeguards like SCCs and the EU‑US Data Privacy Framework. Significant caveats include the effective waiver of the 14‑day cooling‑off period once you start using paid plans, the optional but high‑risk routing to China‑based models, the concentration of personal and project data in the Auto‑Memory feature, and fairly typical limitations of liability and intellectual property guarantees around AI‑generated outputs. Overall, the policies compare favourably to most AI SaaS tools, but they still demand a cautious, privacy‑aware approach to the prompts and client data you choose to run through the system.
What I like is that you don't have to be an uber-geek knowing which models are hot right now, etc. Instead, you decide what's important to you and go from there. Chinese LLMs are turned off by default, due to the lack of GDPR protections, but you can turn them on. Promising!
It might sound somewhat egotistical, but when I'm trying a new AI model or service, I search my own name. Why? It's pretty unique, so if it's not accurate, then I'm not going to use it.
I'm pleased to say that discode answered this with ease. It took a bit longer than normal, because I turned speed all the way down, and eco all the way up, along with quality.
Interestingly, there's the option to turn on privacy, and to add a small local model within your browser which suggests redacting the names of people and companies:
Finally, you can press the 'improve answer' button which uses a different LLM to review for errors, etc.
This is almost exactly what I would have done if I was launching a product like this. After a quick play, I'm impressed! Pricing seems reasonable, too:
Our ‘subscription’ isn’t really one: it works like a phone plan. A pile of credits is included, and when they’re used up, you top up. And when there’s nothing left at all? We don’t quietly throttle you down so you won’t notice — the music just stops. No coin, no music. You drop a fresh coin in the jukebox — top up your credits — and it plays on. No automatic charges, no surprises. Don’t feel like topping up? Then you wait until next month.
