It looks like we're going to have to go back to Switzerland

Collection of Starbucks mugs

About a decade ago, I was flying back from LA and I realised I hadn't bought a gift for my wife. As I was into matcha before it was cool, I happened to be in Starbucks, where I saw they had a mug saying 'California' on it.

I didn't know it at the time, but you can only buy these mugs in the actual place itself. It's called the "You Are Here" collection – although more recently they've also added the "Been There Series" with a slightly different design that you can see on the Colorado mug.

We now have 22 of them in total:

  • Barcelona
  • Boston
  • Brugge
  • Brussels
  • California
  • Colorado
  • Berlin
  • Dubai
  • Florida
  • France
  • Glasgow
  • Kuwait
  • London
  • Manchester
  • Netherlands
  • Newcastle upon Tyne
  • St Andrews
  • Switzerland
  • Toronto
  • Vienna
  • Wales
  • Washington DC

Weirdly, some are better quality than others. Washington DC being the worst, closely followed by London, which for some reason is ever-so-slightly smaller than the rest.

Some places I've been, for example Perth in Australia and Faro in Portugal, either didn't have a Starbucks or didn't have the mugs.

I'm both glad and sad we have this collection: glad because it's a reminder of all of the places I've been; sad because I do hardly any travelling for work these days.

Note to self: must get Lisbon mug next month and ask my wife and daughter to get a Gothenburg one when they go.

Chipped Starbucks mug

Anyway, the point of this note is that we've managed to break exactly zero of these over the years, but Switzerland is now mysteriously chipped. We can't be having that, so don't be surprised if you see me pop up in Geneva or Zurich soon...
