E-ink screens

Photo of e-ink monitor in sunlight

I really like the idea of an e-ink monitor for writing. I've got an A4 size reader that I've paired a keyboard with before to sit outside in the sunshine, but it was more of an experiment.

Ideally, I'd like a laptop that could which between a regular screen an e-ink screen at the flick of a switch.

Part of that is legibility in sunlight, but also I have very blue eyes and thin corneas which means I get a lot of glare. So I have to shift the colour temperature when I'm working to night shift all of the time. I do the same on my phone.

About three months ago, I bought the Onyx BOOX 25.3” Mira Pro Color, an e-ink monitor for desktop use. I’ve used it as my primary monitor since, and I’ve had a lot of questions about it. This is my experience report, from the perspective of a working, still mostly typing, programmer.
