Being happy 'in' your life vs. being happy 'with' your life

Dr Laurie Santos

I saw that Noel de Martin created a /brag page on which he linked back to his end of the chapter from 2024. I'd read it when he originally posted it, but on re-reading, I noticed he recommended a podcast that I've started listening to called Ologies.

The particular episode is from 2021 and entitled Eudemonology (HAPPINESS) with Dr. Laurie Santos. There's a transcript [PDF]

HAPPINESS RESEARCH, straight up. What is happiness? How do our circumstances affect happiness? Why is the word “gratitude” kinda cringey? What can we do to feel better? Should we feel guilty for feeling happy? When is positivity “toxic?” Yale cognitive scientist, Eudemonologist, and host of The Happiness Lab podcast Dr. Laurie Santos chats about how scientists measure human happiness and what their research has shown helps achieve it, even during the worst of times. Also: silver medal face & countering counterfactuals, which will make sense when you listen.

It's so worth your time. By the time I was 75% through, I'd shared it with pretty much all of my Signal contacts!

There's also a follow-up episode that I haven't listened to yet, but which I'm very much looking forward to.
